This three-year project aims to tackle low quality education and materials, lack of a stable educational system, deterioration of infrastructure, and low levels of participation among the rural communities in the provinces of Chimborazo and Tungurahua. The project is implemented jointly by the Finnish Children and Youth Foundation (FCYF) and its local partner organization in Ecuador, Fundación Esquel. The project is supported by funding from the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland to the development cooperation projects of NGOs.
Objectives
The long-term development objective of the project is to contribute to the improvement of education through an integral intervention in rural schools in Ecuador. The direct objectives of the project are to improve the infrastructure and equipment, strengthen the bilingual educational system, promote and diffuse Children’s and Adolescents’ Rights and implement environmental component to the schools’ curricula in the selected schools and communities in the central highlands of Ecuador.
Target group/beneficiaries
A total of 8,437 people will benefit directly from the project. This includes 3,167 children, 204 teachers, and 5,065 parents in two provinces. The project will indirectly benefit the families of the children in selected schools as well as residents of rural communities near to the targeted schools in Chimborazo and Tungurahua provinces, a total of around 19,000 people.
Implementation/Results
In coordination with local partners, potential schools will be evaluated and ranked in priority based on need. An architect will be contracted to plan implementation of the improvements, and local community members using local materials will participate and benefit from the construction phase of the project. The new educational spaces will be equipped with chairs, tables, didactic materials and mini-libraries all with environmental and cultural pertinence. A program for implementing Intercultural Bilingual Education and strengthening Childhood, Family and Community Education will be undertaken. Promotion of Children’s and Adolescents’ Rights will be promoted, and further expansion of the program will be evaluated based on results.
After the three year program has concluded, the following results will be achieved:
- The Intercultural Bilingual Education Centers have basic infrastructure and recreational spaces adapted to the local environment.
- The Intercultural Bilingual Education Centers have been equipped with chairs, tables, didactic materials and mini-libraries all with environmental and cultural pertinence.
