Save the Children
(2005-2006)
This project supported a series of workshops for children and youth (ages 8-18) in Sortavala that aimed at improving the overall situation for young people and prevent their social exclusion.
The goal of the project was to offer children from socially vulnerable families an opportunity to learn practical knowledge and crafts, while at the same time developing their social skills and building their self-esteem. Annually over 100 children participated regularly and over 200 children occasionally/ periodically in the workshops. Also camps gathered over 200 enthusiastic children during the years 2005-2006.
Wood crafting, textile work and computer workshops, were organized during the spring and autumn terms. By participating in workshop activities the children got a basis for further vocational studies or job development. Boys learned basic woodworking and crafting skills, and how to make outdoor sport equipment for playgrounds. Girls learned, for example, how to design and make clothes. They also held two fashion shows. Additionally all the children learned typing and basic computer skills in computer clubs.
Camps were also organised during the summer. These included special camp activities designed to meet the needs and skills of handicapped children. With the care of professionals, the children participated in workshops and exercises/sports.
A campaign for renovating playgrounds and yards was also organized. It aimed at encouraging children and their parents to renovate and take care of their own neighbourhood.
A diploma was granted to Mir Detei by the City of Sortavala for renovating playgrounds and playing-fields.
